Chocolate Pudding Cake - The Ultimate Comfort Dessert!

Written by Roar Elias

If you are not familiar with the chocolate pudding cake, then you may know it as a self-saucing chocolate cake or a chocolate fudge cake.

Are you looking for some sweet tasting comfort food? There are lots of things that could come to mind which might make the taste buds happy, but one thing that not many people will pass off is chocolate. There are loads of recipes that consist of chocolate, but if you are looking for something classic that will fill the gap then I suggest you try old chocolate pudding cake. In my books, this is definitely a favourite, loved by people of all ages. I love the way it makes its own sauce, therefore taking away the hassle of having to create extra work for yourself. If you want something quick and easy to prepare for the family, but you still want to keep them coming back for more, then this is a good choice.

The more rustic looking this dessert is, the better, so there is no need worrying about trimming neatly around the edges and making sure there are no excess crumbs on the plate. People strive to find the perfect moist chocolate cake, but if you think about, you can't have anything more moist than this.

This is a great recipe to try out:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 5 Tbsp cocoa
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 Tbsp melted butter
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • Topping
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 cups boiling water

Directions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients together. You can just do this by hand. You don't need a mixer.
  2. Add the milk, melted butter, vanilla extract and walnuts
  3. Grease and spread the mixture in a 9" square pan
  4. Mix the brown sugar with the cocoa and sprinkle on the top.
  5. -Pour the boiling water over the top.
  6. Bake for about 45 minutes at 350 degrees F / 180 degrees C and let it cool for 15 minutes before you serve it.

You can add something to the sauce for a variation such as coffee or orange. Make sure you are working with really fine chocolate because this will make the world of difference.

If you have never had this before, you can look forward to what looks like a regular chocolate cake, except that it is warm and the gooey chocolate inside is a real treat. If you serve this with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream or cream then you will be in heaven. I really think this is a nice old fashioned, comfort type of dessert so I wouldn't make it all neat and perfect in moulds and turn them out on the plate, garnished with fruit. This is something that should be baked as one dish and then sliced into squares, but this is completely up to you.

If you serve this straight away, you will be serving molten lava so that is why you have to give it 15 minutes to rest. One can, therefore say, that it is a very versatile recipe and if you have someone to impress, I would definitely shoot for the molten lava version.
